TFI Press & Buyers Brunch

TFI, otherwise known as the Toronto Fashion Incubator, a branded company that has been around since 1987, guiding and nurturing fashion designers. The TFI, has been known for producing some of the most well known names in our own Canadian backyard, such as David Dixon, Greta Constantine, Keith Richards, followed by internationally know names like Marc Jacobs, John Galliano and many, many more. TFI provides beginning designers with a space to work with, teachers, along with successful current industry people to work with them, helping them market, and brand and appeal to the audience they are haunting for. This season at the TFI Press & Buyers Brunch- a handful of successful designers were chosen to display they’re products ranging from garments, to outerwear to jewellery, handbags and even scarves, with the twist being that everything had to be made and sourced from Canada this season, providing a harder task make shift, while also creating a job for Canadians.

Christopher Bates

Classic and clever Mr. Bates always seems to have a cheeky and edgy flare to his menswear collection every season, combining a sophisticated clean look that men tend to gear towards, while mixing it up with a modern twist, calling it “fashion”. This season Bates seemed to focused on playing around with the typical mans look, featuring straight pant, shirt, crew neck sweater, and mixed it up with tailored leather pant, looser fitting blazers, while also adding in the classic cable knit for a sweater, while even pulling out a traditional three-piece suit, and of course who could forget his clever way of introducing the pinstripe and wider gingham stripes, while throwing in that cheekiness with a red lipstick kiss mark on the collars of a few of the shirts.

The casual clothing brand, first a men’s line branched out into producing a few women’s pieces here and there- to now being known as one of Toronto’s top design brands. The comfy casual line, had a city, camp feeling this season, featuring the seasons trend across the globe of gingham pattern and leather pant. Although the leather pant are in, Bustle took its own twist, by producing a quilted leather pant, while also pushing the quilted look onto the jackets and sleeves, also keeping the gingham pattern simple- playing with the pattern on pant, jackets, shirts, vests and even combining both the quilted leather and gingham pattern together on a crewneck sweater. The line consisted of plenty skinny pant; two button up blazers, classic shirting, cable knitted cardigans, and the popular vests, and of course wind breakers, in a matt finish.

Hillary MacMillan

Known for creating women’s clothing, in a manner that everyone could wear, more so the modern women, and her everyday tasks, while being comfortable. The fresh on the scene designers clothing line represents historic periods from season to season, having main focuses, in this case having accented fur pieces and of course painting the runways with the all white trend and gingham detailing, while also adding in the famous leather from designer to designer. The line featured plenty shift dresses with different cuts, A-line skirts, knitted sweaters and fabulously crafted fur bags, trim and skirts, all summed up on a fashion forward, grunge type woman.

Stephan Caras

Noted fashion designer Stephan Caras hit the ball out the park once again this season, with delicately crafted works of art, shaping the woman’s body in a magnificent structure, giving her grace and style, while empowering her status. It’s no wonder he’s listed under World Top 20 Fashion Designers and Top 25 Most Beloved and Inspiring Fashion Designers of the World.             This season the house of Caras dipped into a darker atmosphere using only blacks and ruby reds in his creations, of course the main focus being his elegantly crafted gowns- yet this season was not different, then the classic Caras, taking a risk with his clientele, having plunging necklines, slits, and mesh. Stand out pieces would be his piped hand sewn garments along with his princess cut tops and dresses, cinching in the waist creating an hourglass figure, thus portraying a softer feminine figure, although the clothing described “drama”. The garment, that seemed to grab the crowds attention, in response with applause was a gown, with a deep plunge in the front and open back, almost like a halter top but more extravagant, featuring a classic bottom, where the over layer of mesh had hand sewing flowers and petals, that seemed to bring the audience to a halt with goose bumps and thrill.

David Dixon – White Label

At Toronto’s World MasterCard Fashion Week, brilliant designer David Dixon put on a show like no other.  Showing his White Label collection, which he has designed for Kleinfeld Hudson’s Bay, David began the show with a short and inspiration video.  The video, which centered love, family and relationships, was so touching that it brought tears to some of the audience member’s eyes.  The line featured elegant and classic wedding gowns in not only white, but also in a light pink.  The bridal line is truly brilliant, with pieces that have been tailored to perfection for a woman’s body and constructed with elegant and light fabrics.  Truly an undeniably marvelous and unforgettable bridal wear debut by David Dixon.

Nikki Wirthensohn’s  Narces’ fall collection for 2014 has countless amounts of great pieces that will steal the heart of many fashionistas. Fashion Weekly Magazine was given the honour of attending Narces’ fall fashion show on Friday, March 21. Narces has out done themselves again this year with classy and elegant pieces that makes a statement on their own. This year, Narces collection included many unique combinations, such as maxi dresses in mesh material with lace detailing and midi length dresses in sheer material with heavy embellishments. This fall except to see the comeback of fur thick coats, Narces has given the ideal piece some unique twist by adding patterns and embellishments to the fur coats.
