The Rise of Vintage Clothing in a
Fast Fashion World
Thrifting has become a great way for consumers to have access to a variety of clothes, both old and new to refresh their wardrobe. Consignment stores have also risen in popularity, allowing for the lifespan of fashion items to continue to grow. With the fashion industry coming under heat for the environmental impact of fast fashion, there has been a shift within consumers to buy vintage and used clothing. Whether it’s visiting your local Value Village or Salvation Army, visiting popular secondhand websites like Depop, Poshmark or Carousell or going online to high-end consignment stores like The RealReal, Vestiaire Collective, VSP Consignment or Treasures of New York City, the options for finding rare, one of a kind pieces are endless.
The rise in vintage shopping and recycling clothing items not only comes from the switch over into focusing on more environmentally friendly shopping habits, but also to have those unique pieces in your closet that represent your style, and that not everyone will have. Celebrities and influencers like Kylie Jenner, Bella Hadid, Kim Kardashian-West, as well as A-list stylists like Monica Rose have been able to pull from designer archives. Virgil Abloh, creative director of the streetwear brand Off-White and the artistic director for Louis Vuitton menswear collections has discussed the resurgence of vintage clothes in an interview with Dazed Magazine in 2019, saying “I think that like we’re gonna hit this like, really awesome state of expressing your knowledge and personal style with vintage – there are so many clothes that are cool that are in vintage shops and it’s just about wearing them.” Incorporating vintage pieces into any wardrobe is fun and easy and is a great way to show-off your personal style!
