Centuries ago, it was common to go months without seeing your loved one. War and exploration kept men away from their significant others for months, if not years at a time. The only communication was hand-written letters and notes delivered by horse or bird with no guarantee it would reach the recipient. Talk about long-distance relationship—and you think we have it bad?

With the growing reliance on technology, the distance between long-distance couples continues to become smaller. Not to belittle the effort it takes to endure the time spent apart but technology, and social media in particular, have made it infinitely easier to communicate with your loved one.

According to a study in the Journal of Communications, it was found that separation does in fact make the heart grow fonder. The long-distances do not have a negative effect on relationships; in fact, it makes for deeper connections. It was found that people tend to put a lot more effort in communicating affection and intimacy, which in turn creates that deeper bond and trust.

Here’s a huge tip from the study: avoid emails, which was found to be the least romantic form of communication. From our point of view, Skype and other video chat outlets allow for both a visual and auditory connection. It tops the phone call by actually allowing the couple to see each other’s reactions and body language, which is crucial in deep communication.

Obviously long-distance relationships rely on mutual trust—it is important to give significant other the chance to prove him or herself without jealously and stress. This is not a trivial notion as it takes a great effort to keep the lines of communication open and being able to express your thoughts honestly. If possible, regular visits help keep the flame alive. As a couple, find options that you are both comfortable with to share that sexual intimacy while apart.

We’re not saying it’ll be easy, but we’re saying it’ll be worth it. Each couple has a unique story; therefore, it is up to the individuals involved to find outlets that they are comfortable with. And if you really want to brighten those lonely nights, Pillow Talk has created paired pillows that pulses with a gentle flow of your distant lover’s heartbeat miles away. It just doesn’t get any cuter than that.
