As the cliche goes, “Everything Old Is New Again”.
Y2K fashion is making a comeback in 2022, and has become a mainstream trend once again. The mid ‘90s to 2000s style never expired as everyone can relate to the feeling of nostalgia in one way or another - this is no different when it comes to fashion. As millennials and Gen Zs age, they have taken on the styles their parents once wore when they were their age, reminiscing on the era.
LOW-RISE PANTS
Low-rise are cool again.
Low-rise jeans first blew up in the 2000s as they were widely worn by celebrities like Paris Hilton, Destiny's Child, Britney Spears, along with many others. With Y2K coming back stronger than ever, low-rise are also making a comeback, in both tight and baggy. This can apply to any pair of pants that distinctively rests on the hips, framing the stomach and waist. These types of pants can be paired with almost anything ranging from blouses, crops, basics, oversized blazers, etc.
CROCHET TOPS
Crochet was once grandma's hobby, not anymore.
Since the start of the pandemic, many turned to arts and crafts as a form of escape. Crochet for many, can be a therapeutic activity that is rewarded in the end. Designers around the world are incorporating crochet in their spring/summer collections. These handcrafted pieces are now infiltrating the beaches and sidewalks. These tops can be worn with juxtaposing lightweight cotton and linen fabrics, or even layered over dresses and other clothing pieces.
BAGUETTE BAGS
“this is not a bag, this is a baguette” - Carrie Bradshaw
Popularized on the Sex and the City in the late 1999s by Fendi, this product is often recognized as the first “IT” bag. The concept is to create a purse that could be held like a loaf of bread under the arms. The popularity of this style encouraged other brands to make dupes that have made it to Y2K fashion. As both practical and stylish, there is not a reason to skip this piece from your wardrobe.
CHUNKY PLATFORM SHOES
The higher, the chunkier, the better.
Platform shoes are the median of sneakers and stilettos - giving you both comfort and height. These shoes give a playful and bold boost to any outfit while elevating plain basics. With its versatile nature, you can pair these with a bodycon dress for a night out, or dress pants for a meeting, or just casual basics for a walk to the store!
